ABDON CALLAIS OFFSHORE

Apparently Abdon Challais converted a shrimper in 1948 to supply offshore oil installations. This is two years after the construction of a platform five miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico by the Magnolia Petroleum Company, and a year after Superior Oil installed a platform 30 kilometres off shore. The latter platform provided all services for the well being drilled, and was the first to provide accommodation for the workers. This makes Abdon Callais Boat Rentals one of the oldest players in the business.

Today the company, now known as "Abdon Callais Offshore" is run by Peter Callais the grandson of the founder. They operate 40 offshore vessels including 10 crewboats.

We have chosen to present the information in American units.

Europeans reading this may be interested to see that some of the 210 ft supply vessels owned by this company have a gross tonnage of only 97 tons. This is achieved by minimising the enclosed spaces in the accommodation. Typically the cabins have very large steel plates fitted to the inner bulkheads and when these are removed for the measurement of the gross tonnage they are not "enclosed spaces". In American flag ships the gross tonnage determines the level of formal qualification required by the crew.
