PICTURE OF THE DAY 2012

Photographs of offshore support vessels in action in many parts of the world. 

Many old stagers including myself are distressed by the use of DP as a substitute for the basic skill of ship handling. DP has a place but it is not a silver bullet. So here is the Castoro 7 laying pipe within feet of the small York platform. In order to ensure that the line is laid in the correct position the pipelayer has to be held up against the current by the Maersk Tackler, while it moves slowly forward heaving in the forward anchors and letting out the after ones. You can't do any of this on DP.
