PICTURE OF THE DAY 2012

Photographs of offshore support vessels in action in many parts of the world. 

We are back offshore, and this is the Sedco Energy photographed by Jaksa Braksic off the coast of Africa recently. This is an unusual class of semi-submersible with the drill floor and the derrick at one end instead of in the middle. There are a couple of advantages in this layout. One is that the open deck is much larger, for the storage of all the stuff that accumulates on semi-submersibles and the other is that the accommodation is at the greatest possible distance from the point at which a blowout might occur. On the other hand the reason they put the derrick in the middle is because the  movement in adverse weather is minimised. You take your choice, and it might be significant that not many people have made this one.
