The Craig Group used to be a traditional deep sea fishing company based in Aberdeen, but famously in 1970 the then managing director Pat Lynch was asked by an oil company to provide a ship to act as a standby vessel. He was not a man to let an opportunity slip through his fingers, and so North Star entered the standby vessel business, using a variety of trawlers.

Over the years the fleet has been modernised, and in recent times the company has had many purpose designed ships built, as can be seen from the details here. In the 21st century they have begun to operate other vessels in the oil industry, including a survey vessel and a number of platform ships.

The page undated with a number of C class ships and a couple of sales at 12/1/12. At the time of writing the company is due to bring into service four D Class vessels of IMT 950 design.

At the time of the 2013 review the four D class ships previously mentioned have joined the fleet and one ship, the Grampian Highlander has left. There are two PSVs currently under construction in Spain, one very shortly to enter service.

At the 2014 review one standby vessel has gone into lay-up and one has been scrapped, two platform ships have arrived, at the time of the review it may be that the latest newbuilding has arrive, but that the website has not been updated. We have not included it either.
